KHS Speakers Series 1904 Worlds Fair-April 5, 2021 at 6pm

Event Details

  • Date: April 5, 2021 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm

Billboards all around the country proclaimed: “MAN’S GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT – St. Louis World’s Fair”. Over 20,000,000 visitors came to see the Fair, also known as the Louisiana Purchase Exposition. The Fair consisted of 1,476 structures and buildings, which ranged up to 22 acres in size. There were 75 miles of roads and walkways, graced by over 1,000 statues. The Fairgrounds were 14 times bigger than Disneyland. 49 foreign countries, 43 US states, and 6 US territories participated in the Fair. Doug Schneider will take you on a visual tour of the Fairgrounds as they were in 1904 and show you where you can find remnants of the Fair in 2018. You will also hear about the 1904 Olympics held in conjunction with the World’s Fair – the first Olympics on American soil.

About speaker, Douglas Schneider.

Armed with a degree in history from Brown University and a master’s degree in linguistics from the University of London, Doug Schneider has lived on 3 different continents and in 10 different states.  He has taken a shine to St. Louis, where he enjoys both showing off St. Louis to visitors and revealing St. Louis to the people who have lived here all their lives.  He has described the history and architecture of downtown, neighborhoods, and suburbs — and shown people the visual delights of fountains, murals, museums, libraries, and historic houses in the area.  And Doug has taken people to the site of the Exorcism and told people where they can find haunted places in the St. Louis area.  Doug helps people get their kicks on Route 66 and helps them re-live the 1904 World’s Fair. Doug loves history and will continue share his love of it and knowledge with others.
